Ex-INS Guldar a Kumbhir-class landing ship tank that was built at Gdańsk Shipyard in Poland that served the Indian Navy for 40 years was decommissioned in January 2024
The project by sinking the decommissioned naval vessel, was spearheaded by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) to boost coastal adventure tourism and local employment
To take care of the ecological impact before being submerged, the ship was thoroughly cleaned of environmental pollutants.
It is designed to act as a major artificial coral reef, promoting marine biodiversity and fisheries in the Konkan region
Once the site is fully operational, it will allow visitors to explore the real sunken warship through scuba diving, guided marine tours, and submarine rides.
The Location: The 1,120-tonne, 83.9-meter-long ship was lowered to the seabed off Nivati Rock (near Vijaydurg) in the Sindhudurg district.
Depth: The warship now rests upright perfectly on the seabed at a depth of roughly 20 to 22 metres
