A Goan villa of the good old days just next to the residential colony in Caranzalem where I stay. Fortunately Goa still presents a picture of the old and the new as far as buildings and houses are concerned.
These houses had a verandah called Balcão , a typical staircase known as Sopana and some had a pair of cement seats known as Sope. The houses had thatched roofs covered with tiles – Mangalori tiles – Regos and Albuquerque brands were popular – I remember these tiles since my family used to get these by ships from Mangalore to Morjim – these ships were called Kothwe – and we had two such Kothwe – Mahalaxmi Prasad and Naguesh Prasad. These tile thatched houses were appropriate for the Goan climate – providing much relief from the scorching sun in April & May and protecting the inside of the house from heavy rains from June to August. And there weren’t much variations in the seasons from year to year because climate change was unheard of thanks to many big trees all around.
